Change is inevitable.
Change is going to happen anyway, whether we want it to or not. Whether we like it or not.
So why do so many people dislike change?
Change means we face the unknown.
Our brain has a job to protect us. It likes to know what the outcome will be to an action. If the outcome keeps us safe then the brain says ‘go ahead’.
Brain: ‘The fireplace is not lit. You can place your hand into it and you won’t get burnt. Go ahead!”
If the outcome doesn’t keep us safe the brain sets off warning signals to prevent us from coming to harm.
Brain: ‘The fire is lit! It’s hot. IT’S HOT! IT WILL BURN YOU AND HURT YOU AND MAYBE EVEN KILL YOU! STAY AWAY FROM THE FLAMES!!!’
However, when the outcome is not known the brain kicks into super-computer mode and activates the amydala, which calculates a million and one different outcomes and triggers your fight, flight or play dead mode.

Even if some outcomes might be okay, the brain tends to ignore these. The ones the brain flags up with huge, red, blinking warning lights are the ones that might cause us any form or harm, distress or upset.
Why does the brain hate change?
The brain hates change because it wants to keep us safe.
And in its determined efforts to keep us safe it has to make sure we don’t ignore its warnings.
So it ensures we remember them. The brain ensures we think about all the million and one, and sometimes even possibly more, things that can and could and might go wrong.
Whether there’s a 50% or eleventy-billion percent chance of it causing us any kind of harm does not compute.
Your brain hates change because it wants you to be safe.
So we worry and we ruminate.
We make up every scenario going.
We come up with a million, billion reasons not to do something.
Because the brain does not know the outcome of doing something different.
The brain does not know, without any doubt, the outcome that doing this different thing will have.
It does not know that this different thing that is about to happen will keep you safe.
The brain dislikes change because it deems it a danger.
Can you train your brain to like change?
The good news is that you can absolutely rewire your brain.
The brain has a series of neural pathways that are consistently being formed and reformed through experiences and it is possible for every single person to rewire their brain and develop a completely different way of thinking.
